Farmington Hills, MI (PRWEB) February 20, 2012

The vast majority of medical images – MRIs, CT scans and X-rays – aren’t accessed frequently, but they require a great deal of infrastructure and bandwidth to make them instantly available to healthcare providers. Healthcare IT professionals require intelligent clinical image lifecycle management, which provides greater ease of data storage and reduced costs through use of the cloud. To help healthcare IT professionals gain control of clinical image data, Logicalis, an international IT solutions and managed services provider (http://www.us.logicalis.com), today announced it was supporting the TeraMedica Evercore® Clinical Enterprise Suite, the leading Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) in the industry, to offer a comprehensive healthcare IT cloud storage solution via the Logicalis Enterprise Cloud.

The Logicalis Enterprise Cloud is an enterprise-class public cloud offering capable of running business critical applications and supporting leading healthcare applications. It offers TeraMedica customers one of the most flexible cloud archive solutions and adheres to the highest industry standards for data centers.

“Our cloud solution for TeraMedica customers is built from a flexible computing architecture that provides the computing power, memory, storage and bandwidth for an off-site archiving of medical images,” says Mike Martin, Logicalis’ vice president of cloud solutions. “In addition, Logicalis provides cloud infrastructure, managed services and HIPAA compliant data handling. We view healthcare independent software vendors (ISVs) as a growth market for Logicalis because we understand the industry, provide appropriate data center and security standards and can tailor cloud solutions to meet their needs.”

The TeraMedica Evercore® Clinical Enterprise Suite now features expanded flexibility in intelligent clinical image lifecycle management, further ease of data storage, and a greater reduction of operating costs through its new cloud storage solution. In addition, Evercore® now provides more storage options through Logicalis’ off-site cloud archiving.

“Our patented Evercore Clinical Enterprise Suite highlights our commitment to offering choices in improving patient care, reducing cost of healthcare and enhancing physician acceptance in the new patient-centered electronic medical domain,” says Jim Prekop, TeraMedica’s president and CEO. “Our patented platform was the first to truly offer clinical image lifecycle management, and it’s a natural fit that TeraMedica would also provide the most comprehensive cloud offering in the market.”

“From our work in the industry, we know that medical images often aren’t accessed or needed more than once. So it only makes sense to farm that data off to the cloud,” says Ed Brown, TeraMedica’s vice president of business development. “Utilizing our intelligent clinical image cloud management services, Evercore Smartstore™ automatically and efficiently moves the data that healthcare providers don’t need to access on an everyday basis, thus significantly saving on storage costs.”

Evercore’s flexible and scalable architecture integrates and manages patient-centric clinical content in the clinical and research settings across wide geographies, including standard DICOM objects. Evercore natively manages and distributes data beyond DICOM using global standards such as MPG, JPG, PDF and many other critical clinical content such as treatment plans for cancer care or vital reports in unstructured data formats.

TeraMedica’s patented Smartstore module intelligently manages the total image lifecycle of DICOM and beyond. Smartstore provides shared enterprise infrastructure for managing clinical content based on business policies, specifically tailored to meet the needs of individual hospitals and/or departments. Evercore’s Univision™ module features a multi-layer, zero-download image viewer, with seamless integration to any EMR/EHR/PHR/RHIO. TeraMedica’s vendor-independent platform connects multiple PACS to any storage system, thus ending cumbersome data migration.

About TeraMedica® Inc.

TeraMedica is a healthcare informatics company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. TeraMedica’s software manages the storage and distribution of digital medical images as well as other clinical content across healthcare and hospital systems, gathering images from imaging devices or PACS, storing them, and distributing them to the point of patient care. TeraMedica’s technology gives physicians virtual access to image data. TeraMedica software uses an advanced enterprise-scale database and “intelligent”, or rules-based, business logic to deliver fast, efficient image management.
About the Chopra Center for Wellbeing

The Chopra Center for Wellbeing was founded by Deepak Chopra, M.D. and David Simon, M.D. in 1996. Located in Carlsbad, California, the Center offers a wide variety of programs, retreats, and teacher training programs that integrate the healing arts of the East with the best in modern Western medicine. The Chopra Center has helped millions of people around the world find peace of mind, physical balance, and emotional healing. The website http://www.chopra.com is your starting point on the path to wellness.

About David Simon, M.D.

Chopra Center Co-founder

Dr. David Simon was a best-selling author, Chopra Center co-founder, and pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine. More than three decades ago as an anthropology student exploring humanity’s earliest communities and cultures, he was drawn to the understanding that the role of the doctor was much more than a disease technician; a true healer had to be a diagnostician, medicine man, psychotherapist, and priest – an expert navigator of the mind and spirit as well as of the physical body.

As a medical student at the University of Chicago, David began studying and practicing meditation. Soon his fellow students were asking him for instruction in meditation as a tool for coping with the stress of their rigorous study demands. “By the time that I had completed my four years of medical school, almost half of my medical colleagues had learned meditation and were practicing at least intermittently purely for the value of having a tool to quiet their mind,” David said.

After finishing his medical degree, David completed several residencies at the University of San Diego and the University of Colorado. He began his influential career in private practice in neurology, and then served as chief of staff and medical director of the Neurological Rehabilitation Center and Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory at Sharp Cabrillo Hospital.

An Expanded Vision of Health and Healing

As a young physician and board-certified neurologist, David continued to explore a wide variety of healing traditions, searching for alternatives to the prevailing medical model that he had found extremely disappointing and limiting since his earliest days in medical school. He later wrote, “At times I was deeply demoralized that the notion of human beings as fully conscious, spiritually aware creations had been totally lost from the medical model of life and health.”

David studied the ancient wisdom traditions of India, Tibet, and China, encouraged by the way in which they combined the concept of body, mind, and spirit into a definition of a health as something more than just the absence of disease, but as a state of well-being and vitality.

David’s first exposure to an Ayurvedic physician was to have a profound impact on his personal life and career. In his book The Wisdom of Healing, David describes meeting this gentle vaidya (Ayurvedic doctor), whose kind-hearted, open nature seemed to inspire the trust of his patients, who were then able to share their deepest concerns and get the most benefit from their visit. David was deeply struck by how the vaidya’s own presence seemed to be the most powerful aspect of his therapy. “More than an expert on health, he seemed to be a living representative of a healthy person, balanced in body, mind, and spirit. In this man, I saw the possibility that a physician could be more than a technical master of pathology – a doctor could guide his patients to health through his actions, words, and being,” David said.

Deeply drawn to the wisdom of Ayurveda, David ultimately became a recognized expert in this 5,000-year-old healing system, including its sister science, yoga. Throughout his medical career, he focused on integrating the theory and practice of these ancient healing sciences with the newer developments of modern Western medicine. He forged a model of health that integrates the multiple dimensions of a human being ― environmental, physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual.

The Creation of the Chopra Center

In 1996, David co-founded the Chopra Center for Wellbeing with his colleague and mind-body healing expert, Deepak Chopra, M.D. Together, they have expanded people’s understanding of the true meaning of health, helping thousands of people throughout the world experience the healing benefits of Ayurveda, meditation, and yoga.

Recognized as a leading authority in the effective and appropriate use of mind-body medicine practices, Dr. Simon’s endeavors resulted in the training of thousands of physicians, nurses, and health care providers. One of the first recipients of a National Institutes of Health grant to study mind-body medical approaches to improving health care, David helped bring integrated mind-body medical programs to medical institutions, health centers, educational institutions, and health resorts throughout the world.

Best-Selling Books on Mind-Body Medicine

David Simon was a best-selling author of many wellness books, including Free to Love, Free to Heal: Heal Your Body by Healing Your Emotions; The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga Guidebook; Return to Wholeness: Embracing Body, Mind, and Spirit in the Face of Cancer; The Wisdom of Healing; Vital Energy; and The Ten Commitments: Translating Good Intentions into Great Choices. He has also co-authored many books with visionary Deepak Chopra, including The Chopra Center Herbal Handbook; Grow Younger, Live Longer; The Chopra Center Cookbook; Magical Beginnings, Enchanted Lives: a Holistic Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth; and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 13, 2012

Anneliese Nitzschke first underwent treatment for melanoma on her left leg 31 years ago, only to have the condition recur in multiple areas of her leg in 2009 and again in 2011. The disease was spreading and she was running out of options.

“Back then, they cut it out, you know, just removed pieces of my leg,” Nitzschke, 74, said. “When it came back again, I didn’t want to lose my leg. I was so afraid of that.”

Instead of the surgical procedures she’d undergone in the past, where cancerous tissue was removed along with a good amount of surrounding healthy tissue, Nitzschke found her way to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was determined to be the ideal candidate for the first procedure of its kind in Chicago—isolated limb infusion, or ILI.

The innovative procedure was brought to Chicago by Ajay V. Maker, MD, director of Surgical Oncology at Illinois Masonic’s Angelo P. Creticos, MD, Cancer Center, and assistant professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

“Anneliese had multiple melanomas located throughout her leg and when I met her, they were increasing in number,” Maker said. “To do nothing could very well have led to the loss of her leg. We discussed her case, and felt that a new treatment that could isolate treatment just to her leg would be her best option and have the least side effects on the rest of her body.”

Maker was trained in both ILI and isolated limb perfusion (ILP) during his time at the NIH’s National Cancer Institute and New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He found Nitzschke to be the perfect candidate for ILI and led the team that performed her procedure earlier in 2011.

“Though melanoma can recur years after initial diagnosis, as in Anneliese’s case, it may spread in the limb without going to other areas of the body,” Maker said.

This localization allows for the effectiveness of ILI, which delivers strong, heated chemotherapy treatment to only the affected limb, leaving the rest of the body unexposed to the toxicity of the chemotherapy. A tourniquet cuts the blood supply from the body and the treatment is circulated only in the affected limb. The drugs are then flushed from the leg prior to reestablishing blood flow. The treatment takes about 30 minutes and the whole procedure can be completed in a few hours, Maker said, and may allow the patient to avoid systemic chemotherapy or further surgery. The patient is typically observed closely for a few days after the procedure to monitor for any side effects. The procedure is only offered at a few specialized centers around the world.

Nitzschke responded remarkably well. She was watched closely in the hospital for a few days after the procedure and had no side effects. “She showed an objective clinical response by our most stringent criteria, with all of her tumors having shrunk considerably and with some of her tumors completely disappearing,” Maker said.

Six months after the procedure, Nitzschke’s melanomas continued to shrink after just the one treatment. “The procedure can be repeated if necessary, but she’s still continuing to responding nicely to the initial treatment,” he said.

“I’m so happy, I think about it every day,” Nitzschke said. “I can walk and stay active. I hope this can help a lot more people.”

West Chester, PA (PRWEB) February 14, 2012

According to the latest statistics from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), more than 150 million Americans use corrective eyewear to compensate for refractive errors, costing over $ 15 billion each year. Chester County Eye Care (CCEC) optometrists and eye surgeons in West Chester, PA say the beginning of a new year often offers relief from those costs for some patients as more and more become interested in vision correction procedures. Doctors with the West Chester cataract surgery practice say they typically see a surge in popularity of eye care and cosmetic services with the dawn of a new year because patients begin taking advantage of financing options and Flexible Spending Accounts as well as the winter weather to help improve their eyesight and their facial aesthetics.

Over 800,000 refractive procedures were performed in the last year, as stated by the AAO survey, the CCEC doctors say procedures such as LASIK, implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery have been growing in popularity over the past few years. They say many patients have begun to see the benefits of improving their vision and decreasing their dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Particularly in anticipation of the coming spring and summer months full of outdoor activities, doctors at the CCEC say the new year is a great time to undergo a vision correction procedure to help them enjoy activities that may be hindered by glasses or contacts.

The CCEC also says cosmetic procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and eyelid surgery are popular at the beginning of a new year as the cooler air of winter can be gentler on the skin and people tend to spend less time outside. “Winter is a great time to undergo cosmetic procedures to erase the skin damage of last year and start fresh. Patients also don’t need to be as worried about exposure to excessive sunshine after the procedure,” says Bruce Stark, MD, Medical Director, Center for Rejuvenations.

Additionally, as a cataract and LASIK surgeon in West Chester, Dr. DeStafeno adds that winter is a good time for routine exams to ensure the issues patients confront can be attributed to seasonal differences. “Our patients with glasses and contact lens have more problems in cold weather due to dryness of the eyes as a result of heating systems in their homes and at work. Glasses tend to be more cumbersome as they fog and blur when transitioning between warm and cold environments.”

Offering a wide range of eye procedures from LASIK to specialty eye care such as treatment of glaucoma, doctors at the CCEC say regardless of when or if patients decide a vision correction procedure is right for them, they should always seek the advice of an experienced and qualified eye care practice. They add that the proper treatment from a dedicated LASIK or cataract surgeon can help patients start the year off on the right foot with a positive and confident outlook on life.

About Chester County Eye Care Associates

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) February 03, 2012

The American Board of Physician Specialties® (ABPS) is proud to announce the renewal of its Gold Partnership with the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) for 2012.

The foundation of ABPS is placing patients first by meeting the board certification needs of rural physicians.

“Healthy communities are dependent upon the supply of physicians and the quality of the workforce,” said ABPS CEO William Carbone. “Not only is an adequate supply of physicians needed to ensure access to care, but being seen by a board certified physician is vital to the health of rural communities.”

Board certification is a voluntary process and a public statement that a practitioner has mastered a core body of specialized knowledge and skills in a chosen specialty at a specific time.

In addition to its focus on the rural physician workforce, ABPS invites all NRHA partners to join in promoting public awareness for disaster medicine preparedness and response planning in rural America.

ABPS is the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc., headquartered in Tampa, FL, ABPS certifies both allopathic and osteopathic physicians in 17 medical specialties including anesthesiology, dermatology, diagnostic radiology, disaster medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine obstetrics, family practice, geriatric medicine, hospital medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, radiation oncology, surgery, and urgent care medicine.
Hollywood, California (PRWEB) February 03, 2012

Christine Heathman, Master Aesthetician, CEO and Founder of GlyMed Plus and the GlyMed Plus Institute of Skin Science™ releases the following statement via Raffles Entertainment regarding the anti-bullying campaign “Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil” and the anti-bullying mascot Miles the Monkey:

The passion behind my commitment to support the anti-bullying campaign “Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil” stem from my own raw bullying experiences that still are a vivid snap shot in my mind. As a child and teen, I experienced bullying from family members and school mates because I was a thin girl, plus I had severe acne break-outs. The bullying was unrelenting & soul destroying. However, I refused to allow the taunting and physical violence I endured by the hands of these bullies to define who I was then, and who I am today.

When I started my skin care company GlyMed Plus 20 years ago, my commitment to help children and teens with horrible acne was one of the first and foremost projects that I had to accomplish. I did this so children would not endure bullying because of a bad skin condition. I still continue on this mission, and I am pleased to join forces with Artist for Global Unity in support of “Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil.” It’s time to bring attention to the epidemic of bullying by making our voices heard. One way we can make a difference is by reaching out to our law enforcement and law makers for new laws and consequences of these bullying assaults.

It does not matter to a bully if you are pretty, skinny, overweight, black, white, brown, yellow, gay, straight, family, stranger! Bullies have an agenda! Please join me with GlyMed Plus, Artist for Global Unity, and Miles The Monkey to put an end to bullying.

We all can make it happen.

Sun Valley, ID (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

The Sun Valley Wellness Institute is pleased to announce that best-selling author and renowned brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor will be delivering the keynote presentation to kick off the 2012 Sun Valley Wellness Festival held over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Her presentation will be held Friday evening, May 25, 6:00pm at the Sun Valley Resort.

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist, experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain in 1996. On the afternoon of this rare form of stroke (AVM), she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. It took eight years for Dr. Taylor to successfully rebuild her brain – from the inside out. In response to the swelling and trauma of the stroke, which placed pressure on her dominant left hemisphere, the functions of her right hemisphere blossomed. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir about her recovery from her stroke and the insights she gained into the workings of her brain, entitled My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey.

In 2008, Dr. Taylor gave a presentation at the TED Conference in Monterey, CA, which has become the second most viewed TED Talk of all time. This now famous 18-minute presentation catapulted her story into the public eye. As a result, she was chosen as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2008. In addition, Dr. Taylor was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series web-cast and was interviewed by Oprah and Dr. Oz on The Oprah Winfrey Show in October, 2008, and that interview was just rebroadcast on Oprah’s OWN in January 2012. Her story is being made into a feature film directed by Ron Howard.

Dr. Taylor is one of those rare speakers who can keep an audience perched on the edge of their seats. She projects an amazing positive energy and is committed to educating everyone about the beauty and resiliency of the human brain. She keynotes with the single intention of helping her audience walk away with a better understanding of what is going on inside their heads and how they can get their brain to do what they want it to do.

Dr. Taylor explains in terms everyone can understand how our brain organizes information and what the differences are between our right and left cerebral hemispheres. She firmly believes that the most important relationship we each have is the relationship between our logical, rational, verbal left brain, and its counterpart – our creative, intuitive, thinking in pictures right hemisphere. She helps us understand how our two brains work together to create a single seamless perception of reality, and what is going on inside our heads when we experience personal conflict.

Dr. Taylor now serves as the CEO of My Stroke of Insight, Inc. and as the Chairman of the Board of Jill Bolte Taylor BRAINS, Inc., a not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to providing educational services and promoting programs related to the advancement of brain awareness, appreciation, exploration, education, injury prevention, neurological recovery, and the value of movement on mental and physical health, as well as other activities that support this purpose. She is working on the creation of a Serious Game for Health for neurological recovery as she feels passionate about helping others find their way back from neurological trauma.

Dr. Taylor also serves as the National Spokesperson for the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center (Harvard Brain Bank) and educates the public about the shortage of brain tissue donated for research into the severe mental illnesses. Since 1993, she has been an active member of NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) and is currently the president of the NAMI Greater Bloomington Area affiliate in Bloomington, Indiana.

Dr. Taylor travels extensively as a keynoter at conferences around the world and is having a wonderful time helping others learn more about their own brains and how to realize that peace really is just a thought away. The Sun Valley Wellness Institute is honored to bring her to Sun Valley where she will be sharing her amazing and insightful story with Sun Valley Wellness Festival attendees.
